Study Finds No Link Between Prenatal Ultrasound Exams and Childhood Leukemia (Jan. 30)

A new study finds that those ultrasound exams during pregnancy are just an opportunity to see if your baby is healthy - and not a reason in themselves to worry about the health of your child after birth.

Swedish researchers, writing in The British Medical Journal, say they find no link between prenatal ultrasound examinations and childhood leukemia. They base their finding on 752 cases reported between 1973 and 1989.

The researchers say the risk of leukemia is not influenced by the number of times the ultrasound exam is performed. And while the risk of lymphatic leukemia doesn't seem to be influenced by when during the pregnancy the exams are performed, the risk of another form of leukemia - myeloid leukemia that affects blood-forming tissues - is slightly, but not significantly, higher when performed during the second trimester.

The researchers also say there's no increased risk dependent on the age of the mother, the birthweight of the child, and twin pregnancies.
